- Remember the Zinc: The human body does not function properly if enough zinc is not consumed. Taken regularly Zinc reduces the number of infections a body may encounter by preventing new infections and treating infections that may already be present. Mega Minerals Complex by Lamberts is recommended by The Green Beauty Bible.
- Get (Magic) Mushrooms: Asian Mushrooms have incredible immune-enhancing properties. A supplement providing five or more kinds of mushrooms (such as reishi, maitake, cordyceps ,enoki and hericium) is highly recommended to take daily, especially during flu season or traveling. One highly recommended brand is Host Defense by New Chapter, which contains 16 mushroom extracts.
- Eat Spices: Flavoring foods with medicinal spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, onions, garlic, and horseradish strongly boosts your immune system. These spices are known to ward of infection and increase the strength of your body and your mind. Revitalising Cinnamon and Cardomom Herbal Tea by Pukka Herbs is a highly recommended spiced tea.
- Drink Fresh Juices: Fresh fruit and vegetable juices are supercharged with nutrients. The high concentration of antioxidants and other essential vitamins and minerals help boost your immune system and helps to detox the body. It is recommended to consume fresh juices daily.

Diversity in Children’s Books
Diversity in Children’s Books: My Motivation by Alex Paramo
Community Publishing was founded on a dollar and a dream, or something like that. Well, not exactly. There were two main motivating factors, equally as important: equity for artists of all mediums and the lack of diversity found in children’s books. I will not delve into the former here, suffice to say that it is still a primary motivator.
As it concerns diversity in children’s books, or lack thereof, I have previously written on this topic and will avoid covering the same ground. I must reemphasize the dearth of people of color in children’s books in every facet of the industry: Authors, Illustrators, Protagonists.
Whet Moser’s article, Diversity in Children’s Books Is Hard to Find—But Important, got me thinking about a point I overlooked in my first article which is the fact that, “Picture books are among the first representations of the broader world that we see. And they are introduced at a critical time.” Indeed folks in the publishing industry know the importance and value of a cover.
Independent Bookstores
Community Publishing recently teamed up with the independent bookstore, Bookworks Albuquerque for a celebration of Samuel’s Story, our latest multimedia children’s book featuring an African American Author (Hakim Bellamy), Illustrator (Melvin Mayes), Music Producer (Roscoe Floyd aka DJ Flo Fader) and protagonist (Samuel). As my daughter Marisol (voice of Princess Marisol of Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves) browsed around the bookstore, I wondered if she see saw lots of faces on the books that looked like hers? Probably not, but this is part of our team – and here is our plan:
Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves written by yours truly (latino/mestizo) featuring a Native American/Chicana/Latina main character with Juancho, Mato, the Wise Woman and Metzli the moon rounding out the multicultural cast. Narrated by Jackie Zamora (Peru) and Music by Matias Pizzaro (Chile) and Juan Carlos Ramirez (El Salvador).
Fiona the Funkadelic Freckle Fairy features a female Author (Alayna Roche), with an all female cast of characters.
Samuel’s Story features an all African American creative production team, an African American protagonist and multicultural characters in an urban setting.
The forthcoming Janie & the Hummingbird written by Artist/Musician/Educator Seth Hoffman is a bilingual story about a Hummingbird stuck inside a school library.
The forthcoming Bella the Caterpillar is bilingual and was written by a 7 year old girl (Native American/Chicana/Latina). It is set in the Carribean, narrated by Raquel Rivera (Puerto Rico) and including children voice actors, with music by Christian Orellana (Peru).
The forthcoming Places I’ve Been was written by Educator Alexandra Villegas (Latina) and features wildlife from the various states that Ms. Villegas has lived in.
The forthcoming Princess Marisol & the Portal is the sequel to Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves. features the characters mentioned above and includes Keith Sanchez as the Music Director.
Overall the publishing industry itself is terribly underrepresented. At Community Publishing we pride ourselves in the diversity, our Founder’s are myself and Yvette Sandoval (Chicana), as well as our creative talent and books! Please consider our books, available in digital and print. Together we can make books more colorful/culturally diverse and therefore more reflective of the country and world at-large. Pinpricks of a Busy Bee: St. Patrick’s Day & Four-leaf Clover!
St. Patrick’s Day & the Four-Leaf Clover by AJ Roche
The four- leaf clover is a rare variation of clover that grows occasionally on the common three -leaf clover plant. Traditionally this special four- leaf clover is said to bring good luck to their finder, especially when found by chance. Each leaf is believed to represent something different. The first leave from the left is known to represent faith. The second leaf represents hope, the third represents love, and the last leaf represents luck. A five- leaf clover (extremely rare) is said to bring money.
There are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every 1 four -leaf clover. Clovers can produce more than 4 leaves though. The largest number of leaves ever found on a single Clover stem is 56. This rare 56 leaf clover was discovered in Japan in 2009. Pre Fukushima FYI.
It is known that St. Patrick came to convert the Irish to Christianity in the 5th Century. He used the Shamrock, or three leaf clover, as a way to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. Before the arrival of the Christians, the plant was sacred to the Irish Druids because the three leaves formed a Triad. It became a symbol of rebellion in the 19th century. It is said that during this time anyone wearing a shamrock risked death by hanging.
The four leaf clover is now associated with St. Patrick’s Day, even though the tradition of the lucky or blessed clover actually began by recognizing the three- leaf clover as “normal” and the four-leaf clover as “special”. No matter how many leaves are on YOUR Clover, I wish you all the best of luck. Love & luck!

The Pinpricks of a Busy: Milking Your Bath Time
Milking Your Bath Time by A.J. Roché
Cleopatra was well known for her beauty and her flawless complexion. She used the milk of sheep and goats with honey, highly scented essential oils, spices and herbs. When applied topically, cream, yogurt and milk are highly beneficial moisturizers and are suitable for sensitive skin. Alphahydroxy acid, the lactic acid in dairy is an effective natural exfoliator.
Dairy also contains vitamins A and D which are vital for maintaining youthful healthy skin. Below are some recipes for bath milks that you can make at home. You can make up enough for a few baths if you store them somewhere cool and dark for about a week. If you are lactose intolerant, substitute with coconut milk or milk from goats or sheep.

The Pinpricks of a Busy Bee: The Wild Rose
The Wild Rose by A.J. Roché
Wild roses grow on shrubs and cacti that have compound leaves and sharp prickly branches. These sweetly scented flowers bloom white to deep pink in color and have five broad petals. These flowers can easily be found on plains, mountains, foothills and open sunny fields.
After removing the bitter white area at the center of the flower, the petals can be eaten raw. Young shoots, leaves and buds can also be eaten raw or cooked. The fruit of the plant, known as Rose Hips, are packed full of vitamin C. (One tablespoon is the equivalent of five large oranges.) Most hips ripen in early to mid July, but can also be found in the late fall. The fruit of this flower can be eaten raw, cooked, boiled or dried. To get to the rosehip one must remove the mass of hard, hairy seeds that cover the fruit. Only the outer shell of the rosehip is edible.. It is important to know to only eat the outer portion of the fruit.
The seeds of most species are very prickly and may cause internal issues. Wearing gloves when harvesting this fruit is highly recommended to avoid thorns and stickers. Love and light and eating right!

Three of the top ten selling drugs currently being sold in the United States are specifically for indigestion and heartburn. The main reason is that we live in a culture marked by poor diet which casues digestive problems, major health problems and shorter life spans.
Starting with the obvious tips, such as eating smaller meals, chewing thoroughly, reducing stress and avoiding cigarettes, alcohol and deep fried foods. The sugars and carbonation found in soda pops are also linked to diabetes as well as irritable bowel syndrome. In addition to eliminating these foods and beverages, eating organic foods and adding the proper amounts of distilled water to your diet can je lp aid digestive problems.
3 Herbs to Improve Digestion
There are also three herbs one can add to their diet.
- The first herb is Peppermint. Peppermint relaxes the intestines, soothes spasms, settles the stomach, elliviates gas and increases healthy gastric secretions.
- The second herb is Ginger. Ginger has been shown to soothe the digestive lining and balance gastric juices.
- Chamomile is the third herb. Chamomile is gentle and calming on the stomach. Combining the three herbs as a tea and drinking it at meal times will really improve your digestion.
