The Top 5 Moments in Sports 2015 by Alex Paramo
Another wildly wonderful year in the world of sports has come and gone (almost) and I felt compelled to jot down my top 5 moments in sports for 2015. Yeah I know these silly top 5 lists are written these days for SEO ego boosts and top lists are personal by nature but hey what the hey and as they say if you can’t beat them then start your own publishing company and try to beat them again!
With a nod to my NYC roots, my current home, Albuquerque NM, and an acknowledgement that there were many moments to choose from I present my most sincere offerings:
5. NY Mets v. KC Royals World Series:
Ok and admittedly I am no longer a huge baseball fan BUT I love my Mets, and used to walk to watch them play. (I grew up 2 miles away from Shea Stadium) I suffered many terrible seasons while also celebrating in 1986 and their playoff years. 2015 was especially sweet because no one gave them any chance entering the season. We all love a good rags to riches story!
4. FIFA Fraud:
The most popular sport in the world has suffered through many scandals but this one brought down the biggest fish, the previously untouchable and super powerful Sepp Blatter. While this current scandal does not any wrongdoing on the pitch, the extraordinary amount, level and reach of corruption one makes it an earth-shaking event. If the reports are true, FIFA was using its crown jewel, the World Cup to make billions of dollars.
3. Seahawks decide to throw ball in the end zone and lose Superbowl to Patriots:
In the true tradition of the Left Field Bleachers series, this moment in sports can be used as a spring-board for commentary on the world outside of sports. Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll, a brilliant dude, was over analyzing the situation. Oftentimes in life you just got to pick up a head of steam, and run it right up the middle!
2. Patriots decide to Kick ball to Jets in OT and Lose
The Patriots and the Jets have a long history of animosity and mistrust toward each other. So whether or not Patriot Head Coach Bill Belicheck was actually trying to “diss” the Jets, is a mute point to us hardcore NYJ fans! Well it backfired and journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and the boys made him pay!

ONE: 1. Holly Holm defeats Rhonda Rousey
Out to Albuquerque, New Mexico (U.S.A.) via Australia for this one. In the biggest upset since Evander Holyfield defeated Mike Tyson, Holly Holm kicked heavy favorite and UFC Champion Rhonda Rousey’s butt! And just like I knew Tyson was going to get his butt kicked by Holyfield (ask my best buddies Jorge Romero. Ivan Reyes and Ed Thomas) I also knew of this outcome beforehand. Why? Because styles make fights and courage makes fighters great.
Why is this my important moment, because Albuquerque, which has been plagued by bad publicity and negative depictions of it (Breaking Bad), tough times and some violent events (police brutality, road rage etc) is a beautiful place of wonderment and power. The arts scene is leading a revival of this proud city. Despite the overwhelming odds, Holly Holm never lost focus, and determination. Great job Holly!
