The Old Man & the Sea by Alex Paramo
Of course we are all familiar or should be familiar with the great Ernest Hemingway Novel by the same name as my modest scribbling. Just like the aging fisherman, people were doubting the mighty Peyton Manning. Teammates, reporters, experts were talking about “game management” and “mistake-free” football in regards to the future HOF Quarterback of the Super Bowl 50 bound Broncos. But, as the New England Patriots found out, the mistake was on you if you underestimated the old fighter/fisherman. Awaiting Manning is a sea of sharks led by the young and powerful Cam Newton. The Panthers also tout one of the NFL’s top Defensive units.
Remember the day when a QB coming out of college had to sit a few years to watch the veteran and learn? Well nowadays we are dominated by instant gratification (see the firing of David Blatt), so we are ready to run off a legendary dude like Peyton Manning. Gone in sports and society is the loyalty to accomplishments, to dedication, to sacrifice, replaced by minute to minute justification.
Loyalty and Consistency
Oddly and interestingly enough, consistency, which is one of the keys to success, seems to be frowned upon by our society. Young people entering the workforce no longer look for that 20-25 year job and instead hop from job to job every 4-5 years. Of course, it seems, that many companies are employing the Walmart model, which does not include loyalty to employee but rather promote a disposable employee model.
I believe in loyalty. I say give employees a living wage and some damn benefits. I say give Kobe his last multimillion dollar contract, you know, he really deserves it (all the money he made the LA Lakers) and if you have been busting your butt at your job for a lifetime, so do you. So get your hands together one last time for the Old Man as he pushed his little fishing boat onto those uncertain high seas in search for that last big catch!
In two weeks when Peyton Manning drags his old ass out there on the football field, in front of a 100 million people, one last time in search of the big one, I’m going to drag my lazy ass in front of my TV and root for him!
* Authors Note: Im actually not really lazy and I am a NY Jets Fan (for the record)!
