Today’s lesson, or rather reflection, comes to us in the form of compromise. Compromise is an action so vital for collaboration and yet at times it is taken for granted, overlooked or under valued in the grand scheme.
I am fully aware of all this, and yet, compromise does not come easy for me personally. It is not as if I do not value the contribution of others, because indeed I do. It is more that I can become singularly focused on this vision that I have created in my own minds eye. When this does not easily agree with the whole of the group, or there is a dissenting view, I can become frustrated and not want to compromise. It is important to remember that we can always alter the schematics. We can always change shape or go with another idea that could possibly be better than the one we are so dead set on holding on to. But if we are unwilling to compromise we will never know. In this article learning to compromise is explored in greater detail.
Passion and Drive
It is true that creative people carry with them a great passion and drive to achieve. When working with others we sometimes forget that everyone involved has an equal investment in their own success, ego and their own personal vision. Many times this is what drives great groups of people to achieve even greater heights than they could solo. The other side of the coin is that this singular focus can drive a group to confrontation and or discontent. Compromise is an integral barrier that can easily bridge the gap or blow the bridge up completely if we are unable to embrace it. When we do this we self-sabotage and in the end only hurt our projects and our peer relationships.
Compromise comes with a feeling that you were not always getting your exact way but it is good to bend a little and hear alternative points of view It is also good to know when you are just being a pushover and where to stand your ground and stand behind your beliefs and not compromise. We don’t always have to agree with others and if you have a valid point and feel strongly you must make your case and never be bullied into something you don’t believe.
Speaking from a musician’s standpoint it is good to acknowledge that in music we are always compromising to create a better end-product. As we compose lyrics we are pushing and pulling and trying to find the crevice where they fit in with the notation and the music. Compromise is vital for creating good songs.
As young people we can use music as a tool to learn how to compromise with others. Then it is just up to us to put this in play in our normal life and business life situations. Think like a child and remember how easy it was to play with your friends and how it seemed mostly we could always find a compromise.
Go with the Flow
On that note; go forward and compromise. Let one of your peers be right even if you think you are. Find a way to make your life less stressful by going with the flow. I speak these words so that I myself may heed their intent. That, my friends, is another voluptuous edition of blogbomb. blowing up the scene in nuclear fashion.
