This year marks the 101st Anniversary of Mother’s Day and many might wonder how this holiday came to be. For myself, like many others, I owe my life to my mom (literally and figuratively) and the desire to celebrate her is something I strive to do on a daily basis. That same sense of pride drove Anna Jarvis to celebrate the work of her mother, Ann Reese Jarvis. Ann Reese Jarvis, was a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. After years of lobbying by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation thereby creating Mother’s Day as an official holiday in 1914.
Mother’s Day around the World
Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, on the second Sunday of May and some countries celebrate it on an entirely different day. In Spain for example Mother’s Day in celebrated on December 8. In many parts of the world, the holiday is tied into a religious festival and is celebrated in that fashion. For example in many parts of Mexico, parishioners attend a Mother’s Day Evening Mass where the orchestra plays “Las Mañanitas.” In the morning Mexican moms eat tamales and atole prepared by their children.
Mother’s Day at the Rail Yards Market
In the STEAM Zone we have Andrew McCollom. “Tradition teaches us who we are, and it reveals our past within our present. For Andrew McCollom, a good pot develops from a lump of ideas into something with its own tradition, and its own fully-constituted presence. Formed by two hands, the vessel retains an intentional imprint, but in the course of drying, glazing, and firing, it also develops the unique design of its culminated experiences. A functional vessel moves with us–lending its openness for our intention, and maintaining space for contemplation with the continual unfolding of its materiality.”
Aaron Cowan who is an veteran educator with over a decade of teaching experience here in New Mexico. As a former APS teacher and a current CNM instructor he is always looking for creative ways to engage students, especially in areas like sustainability, wearable crafts, and finding art in everyday objects. He has spoken at numerous conferences on these topics and loves to share projects with the general public. Aaron will be demonstrating the making of Duct Tape Flowers for moms.
In the children’s zone David Snow will be tracking the kids the art of sock puppet making! Bring your kiddo down to make a sock puppet for moms!
