Most people tune out their surroundings when they are walking out in the city and disconnect from the environment around them. When someone puts out art for people to find and observe it helps to bring that attention back and also brings into focus an eye for art-ifacts.
When people check in on the Free Art Friday Albuquerque facebook page to find visual clues where to find the art they can then go on the search for art and become an Artiologist! This process is interactive so the art finder becomes part of the process too! The excitement of being on an art mission to find creative treasure is sure to make anyone feel like an Art Explorer! So often art is experienced just by going into a gallery and looking at it on a wall where they can’t touch it or interact with it.
A big and important part of the Free Art Friday experience is people getting to interact with the art. When someone can pick up and hold the art that they may or may not want to take home they get a chance to feel the art and get more of their senses involved in the process. The thrill of an art hunt is sure to bring joy to at any age! Now is your chance, let your love of art be your guide!

One of my visions when I started Free Art Friday Albuquerque is to have a diverse range of arts included in the art sharing. There are many possibilities when it comes to giving art for Free Art Friday! It is not limited to a painting or drawing but may also can included music, poetry, sculpture and other forms of art, basically any piece of art that can be easily taken by the finder without damaging the space it is placed in.
I would like to see more kinds of art shared for Free Art Friday so as a challenge to myself for the next Free Art Friday I will be putting out some art in town that is not a painting or drawing. I also feel this idea will also help me to think more creatively by taking me out of my usual art medium.
I hope this will inspire others to think outside of the art box when think about their creative endeavors and the wonder talents inside everyone yet to be discovered! “No one has ever become poor by giving”-Anne Frank

Giving creates abundance! Whether we know it or not most of us are already familiar with the business model of free sample marketing. The concept behind this business model is to give away an item to attract and reach future paying customers.
One example of free sample marketing most people experience is the free samples that are occasionally given out at the grocery store. For an artist participating in Free Art Friday Albuquerque, giveaways can function in much the same way. I encourage any artist participating in Free Art Fridayto include a business card as part of their art drop so the finder has a way to connect with them if they are interested in collecting/buying more art from the artist.
Giving a piece of art can familiarize more people with your work and help to increase the potential of finding a loyal customer. Increasing our happiness level and quality of life is also another kind of wealth too often ignored. Being active participants in our community and feeling like we are having a positive impact in the place we live makes one rich in spirit which is a type of wealth that will last a life time!

Location, location, location! One of added benefits for the artist participating in Free Art Friday Albuquerqueis that they can have control over the setting of where they put their art and use that as another way to reach a particular audience or accent a statement the art is making.
In this way the place the art is left can function much like the stage settings in a play, highlighting the actor which in this case is a piece of art. One of the most beautiful things about Albuquerque is the diversity of our community and what better way to celebrate that then with art!
Another way the area the art is put can be utilized is including the natural world. Seeing art in a natural setting is a beautiful thing! Placing art in a natural setting demonstrates the connection and relationship art has with nature. There is aesthetics in nature and in art and this commonality bonds them together.
I often will leave a Free Art Friday piece in a tree or in the grass and it looks like it belongs there. It brings attention to the art already present in nature and creates an appreciation in the observer/art finder for the planet they live on.

Free Art Friday is upon us and art is in the air! As a participating artist in Free Art Friday Albuquerque I often try to imagine what it is like to find a piece of art on Free Art Friday. In the busy life of rushing that most people live finding a piece of art is something that makes one pause and contemplate creativity and in the shifting of attention from our normal routine we start noticing other new things in our path that we had been missing.
So in a way the art of Free Art Friday helps to cultivate our attention it the details in life that we did not seem to notice before. That shift of focus from the norm could be the very spark of inspiration that is needed to start a flow of creativity that expands our personal world and helps pave creative pathways that could lead us to places we would have never found otherwise. Imagine being on your way to work or having a bad day when all of a sudden seemingly out of nowhere you see a piece of art that chose you to be its owner, that can make you feel special and change the tone of your whole day.
The artists and art of Free Art Friday create that kind of magic for people allowing us to be part of something bigger then ourselves by engaging in positivity! So please consider participating in Free Art Friday Albuquerque! You are all artists and your art makes a positive difference in your community and beyond!

Random acts of art that reach the heart! When we share things in life with others it makes them more meaningful. Art is no exception to that. Sharing art is a way of connecting with others that can break through feelings of loneliness and isolation by communicating with another person on a creative level.
Each time leave out some art for Free Art Friday Albuquerque I feel that I am fulfilling
my human need to be social. Another important aspect of Free Art Friday is that your art can speak to someone without even needing to meet them, so a person that is shy and normally feels uncomfortable starting up a conversation with someone can now be more comfortable expressing themselves in an anonymous way.
Because you do not need to add words to your interaction when participating in Free Art Friday there is nothing to get in the way of the true meaning of the art piece being able to speak for itself. Art is a language all its own so please participate in Free Art Friday Albuquerque to send a message of creativity that touches someone in a special way!
Bring adventure to your art! There is a feeling of excitement that is experienced when participating in Free Art Friday! The chance for the artist to have fun mapping out where they would like to leave their piece and letting spontaneity happen.
It is a similar to the feeling one gets when they are preparing to give a birthday or holiday gift to someone. The gift remains hidden until that magic moment when it meets the receiver! When someone knows that there was someone out there that put care, time and planning into making and putting out the art it makes them feel even more special when they find it. Being able to give your art a chance to reach people in such a way takes it on an adventure with purpose.
Some Fridays I choose a spot that is part of my daily route and other Fridays I intentionally take myself to an area that I don’t regularly visit which keeps thing fresh and new for me.
This city has many wonderful places and in my search for a location to drop my art I have found places I would have never discovered otherwise! Happy Free Art Friday Albuquerque ! Hope the day finds you with more art in your life.

It’s is the night before Free Art Friday and this artist is stirring up the paint! Friday’s always give me something to look forward too because I get to go out on some art adventures leaving a trail of art along the way! No matter what the rest of my week was like I can always take comfort in process that making art for giving on Friday brings. I see it as a loving commitment to myself and the community I live in to bring more art into the world.
From writing out tags, to put out the work, to thinking about where I will put the art I love every part of the process of preparing for Free Art Friday! In our everyday lives we often encounter many things made by machines and often forget the beauty in things made by hand. How special the gift of art is because it someone invested their heart and time into creating it.
So I really appreciate it when anyone actively participates in Free Art Friday Albuquerque. I also enjoy hearing stories from people who find the art. So please consider giving your art and adventure and share it with others. Happy Free Art Friday!

I’ve been a busy fella here in Wellington. I’m going to try and sum up the past few weeks in this entry. The focus of today’s blog entry is “connections.” You never know where, what, or who one connection will lead to. When I first arrived in Wellington, I was lucky enough to stay in the apartment of Fulbright Alumni Malcolm McKinnon.
Through Malcolm, I met his wonderful friend Keith. After telling Keith that I am seeking out musical outlets and community, he connected me with his friend Patricia, who is part of a ukulele club. Here is a little clip of the magic that happens here.
This group is facilitated by the talented, hardworking, encouraging, and inspirational Shane McAlister. He is a musical soul brother of mine. He spreads joy through teaching and performing music to the world.
Check out his sweet ride.
Now that’s what I call arriving to the gig in style. One day I was walking down the road to find a nice place to do some busking (playing music on the street).
I found a nice place to play by the water. This lady approached me and told me I could not play there. She pointed to some places not far away that I was allowed to play music. I thanked her, and we got to talking. She detected my accent (yes I have an accent, I was quite excited to learn this) and asked what I was doing here in New Zealand. I explained that I am here to look at the role of music and the arts in education. She told me about her son and his work with teaching Maori and Kapa Haka.
Kapa Haka
Kapa Haka is the term for Māori performing arts and literally means to form a line (kapa) and dance (haka). Kapa haka is an avenue for Maori people to express and showcase their heritage and cultural Polynesian identity through song and dance. So, I connected with her son Matiu. I contacted Matiu over Facebook and explained who I am and what I’m doing (and that I met his mother).
I asked if I might sit in on some of his classes. He told me to meet him outside the Paekakariki train station a few days later, and I could accompany on a full day of teaching.
Ticket to Ride
I got my train ticket to Paekakariki (about an hour ride north of Central Wellington). As you may know or remember about the “hongi” from my earlier blog entry: A hongiis a traditional Māorigreeting in New Zealand. It is done by pressing one’s nose and forehead (at the same time) to another person at an encounter. It is used at traditional meetings among Māori people and on major ceremonies and serves a similar purpose to a formal handshake in modern western culture, and indeed a hongi is often used in conjunction with one.
In the hongi, the ha (or breath of life), is exchanged and intermingled. The breath of life can also be interpreted as the sharing of both party’s souls.
He taught hongi to some students. The students are very respectful and the connection they have with each other is beautiful. It was powerful to see these kids doing Kapa Haka.
Between classes, I met the school principal who told me to feel free to walk around and check out the campus. He encouraged me to look at the school garden. I was curious to see how it compared with our lovely garden at Mountain Mahogany Community School.
I met these great kids who gave me a tour of the garden. They snacked on various plants (just like the kids at MMCS). After a full day of teaching students,
Matiu was asked to present at the staff meeting to teach some Maori to the teachers. The teachers and principal really wanted to improve their Maori pronunciation and understanding.
This man is a hard worker, a talented musician and teacher, and he is really passionate about what he does.
These schools are truly fortunate to have him working with their community.
Connecting Opportunities
My Fulbright host family is the couple Bill and Sally Barrett. Sally happens to be the wonderful principal at Wadestown School. She welcomed me to do some musical activities with some classes here.
Another connection I made is with the advisor or my fellow Fulbrighter, Shahnaz. His name is Bruce Carey. He’s not only a great professor, but he’s also a great songwriter and performer.
Through Bruce, I met this other talented singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Moses.
Bruce is the person who told me about the great open mic at The Fringe Bar, which led to my first New Zealand gig. Both Bruce and Chris opened for me at the Fringe Bar on Friday March 13th 2015.
I’ll end this entry here for now. Stay tuned for some more photos and video clips of the culture here in Welllington, New Zealand. I’ll be visiting several more schools these next couple weeks. For now, won’t you join me in some delicious gelato?
